Globalisation is imposing new demands
Ulf Nilsson, president of Volvo IT

We have said it before – Volvo IT’s customers are becoming increasingly global and we have to keep pace with this trend. In actual fact, we should be one step ahead whenever possible. During the autumn, we shall be globalising our activities within Infrastructure & Operations. We shall be combining the things at which we currently excel, such as good relations with local customers, with the utilisation of our resources at global level. We shall also be improving the conditions for standardising our services and processes.

In a global organisation, we have to collaborate in a different way. It is now a question of virtual partnership. This imposes new demands when it comes to both collaboration and the way we use the technical support systems that are currently available. We have interviewed a guru in this area, Jessica Lipnack from the consulting company NetAge. She says that attention should focus on sociology rather than technology and the tools should stimulate collaboration not hamper it.

To see how virtual partnership functions in reality, we have met the CIO and the head of corporate communications at Volvo 3P, a company in the Volvo Group that is well to the fore when it comes to tearing down the barriers between the company’s offices on four different continents. They share their experiences and dreams for the future.

We also report on Volvo Rents in the USA which is testing a digital pen. This is an example of the way we work at an early stage to conduct short, practical tests on technical innovations.

We are also extremely proud to be the official IT supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race. From the start in Vigo, Spain, in November to the finish in Göteborg in June next year, Volvo IT will be working at every stop-over, where we shall be making sure that the IT systems work. We shall be setting up media centres and office equipment, but we shall also be responsible for the official race website, one of the most well-visited sites in the world during the actual race. We shall therefore be obliged to deliver it in extreme conditions – heat, moisture and high relative humidity, while making use of our global skills and expertise.
